NORFOLK — The Virginia Stage Company has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to help commission and produce a new play about the military. Deborah Brevoort’s new play, with a working title of “The Comfort Team,” will “explore the challenges and joys that families face when a loved one is serving their country,” says Managing Director Keith Stava. “Hampton Roads is home to the largest concentration of military families in the nation. ‘The Comfort Team’ is a story that will resonate for so many here and across the country.” Brevoort wrote the romantic comedy, “The Poetry Of Pizza,” which the stage company presented in 2008. Her new play is projected for the 2010-2011 season. It will be the fourth production in the stage company’s “American Soil” series, a multi-year new play development project exploring the cultural and historical roots of Southeastern Virginia. Other plays presented under the “American Soil” banner have included “A Line In The Sand” by Chris Hanna and “Alive and Well” by Kenny Finkle. “SCKBSTD – A New Musical” by Bruce Hornsby will premiere in January 2011. “Virginia Stage Company’s ‘American Soil’ project reflects our company’s commitment to nurturing new works that will not only tell our area’s stories, but will also add to the national repertoire of plays,” said Stava.
