The Drolls

The year is 1659. The theatres in London are closed. The Puritans have seized power, outlawing all forms of entertainment. Unemployed actors and blackamoor musicians, known as drolls, take to the streets to perform forbidden comedy routines for a populace starved for laughter. The Drolls tells the story of the outlaw actors who kept the theatre alive during one of the darkest chapters in England’s history. A comedy for six actors (5 men/1 woman; 2 black/4 white), The Drolls was commissioned by the Florida Studio Theatre during the Covid-19 pandemic.
